This is a very large old field. Forget the restaurant in the terminal building. Instead try the Dutch Pantry just across the parking lot. Or, better yet, try the Air Transport Command Restaurant just a 5 minute walk to the right after you exit the front of the terminal. (302-328-3527) Great Sunday brunches and not nearly so crowded as the PNE 94^th Aero Squadron. Fly over the the old fort on departure. Or, better yet, rent a car (at the FBO or from National or Avis in the Main Terminal building) and visit Winterthur Museum & Gardens or Longwood Gardens. Both are former Dupont estates. We’ve been to both and they are well worth a visit…or, two! Longwood Gardens offers 1,050 acres of spectacular gardens, 3 ½ acres of which are indoors. Winterthur is on 1,000 acres, offering gardens and a museum of decorative American arts (1640-1860) shown in 196 room settings. Winterthur is approximately 20 minutes north of the airport. Take DE Hwy 141, out of the airport, to DE Hwy 52. You won’t miss it, the location is well marked. Longwood Gardens is probably another 10 minutes north of Winterthur, and located in PA. Continue north on Hwy 52 until PA Hwy 1, turn left for a short distance to the Gardens entrance. Both Winterthur and Longwood Gardens have nice restaurants on the grounds (important to pilots!)
