VIRGINIA

 Luray Caverns (W45)

Luray, VA (2 mi)
Washington Sectional
Elevation: 902

You can walk to the spectacular caverns from the airport, or someone will pick you up. Also at the cave is an auto museum. There is a restaurant at the cave and picnic facilities are available. Fly down the Shenandoah Valley while you are there. (6/84)

Tangier Island (TGI)

Tangier Island, VA (4 mi)
Washington Sectional
Elevation: 7

Tangier Island is in the Chesapeake Bay, about 2 hours, at C-172 speeds, from MMU. You can walk or rent bicycles to tour the island or ride the jitney that stops at the airport. Mrs. Crockett’s Chesapeake House serves good family style dinners of crab cakes and fixings. The book, Beautiful Swimmers, describes life on the Chesapeake and devotes a good portion to Tangier Island. When flying to or from Tangier Island, stay clear of the restricted area immediately to the west of the island. Also, the field has no fuel service, so plan accordingly. (10/89)

Williamsburg-Jamestown (JGG)

Williamsburg, VA (3 mi)
Washington Sectional
Elevation: 49

Nice FBO with car rentals. Drive into Williamsburg to see the Colonial village, or to Busch Gardens Amusement Park. The food in Williamsburg varies from colonial to Japanese, so you shouldn’t be bored at any time. Hotels are close to the Colonial village once you get there by car. You should drive out to Carter’s Grove to see an old plantation that has seen many famous people and events right up to the 20th century. Remember that it gets hot earlier in the year in Virginia, so even Memorial Day weekend is tough on people and airplanes. (gv/ked/dd/md 9/94)
